Home office excitement

Work on our addition began last week while I was on the road, so I missed out on the demolition work that was required to make room for our new master bedroom, bathroom and front entryway.

This week, though, while I am at the home office I get to experience some of the construction thrills as excavation on the bedroom foundation has begun (following yesterday's move of the gas line). The mere arrival of the heavy equipment this morning caused quite a bit of breakfast excitement. Benjamin immediately wanted to know if he could ride the excavator to school. No such luck for him.

Now that the kids are all off to school, things have died down to the occasional shake and thump as the excavator does its thing.

Actually, I am more distracted when it is quiet. What happened? Did they hit a snag? Perhaps. The fellows at this very moment are peering quite intently into the inner workings of the excavator's hinge. That can't be good....

One happy result so far they have ripped out the tree roots that have vexed just about every landscaping project on that side of the house since we bought the house in 2000. WooHoo! Hope that wasn't the cause of the equipment malfunction....

Update: They broke a pin! They say it may already have been broken from a previous job, but breaking through the frozen ground in our yard sealed the deal. A part is on order and they'll be back tomorrow after they pick it up. So for the rest of today, it will be a distraction-free work zone in the home office.
