In-flight wifi continued

I've written recently about in-flight wifi, and there's been an uptick in activity by the airlines just this week.

Today, my former colleague Jeff Bennett writes about blogging from 33k feet (posted here using ShareThis) while aboard Virgin America's inaugural flight.

CBS reported live from the Virgin skies this morning, too:

Yesterday, Staci Kramer of paidcontent.org wrote about Southwest's testing of it's in-flight wifi service.

Southwest's video of the experiment:

I am itching to try either, though I have one worry: How worth it will in-flight wifi be if I still have to use the laptop half-folded and at an angle while the person in front of me reclines and takes a nap?

Meanwhile, MASSRides also reports in its e-mail newsletter today that the MBTA is offering free wifi on its coaches. Complete details on the wifi program are available on the MBTA Web site. It appears as if currently two coaches per train are equipped, with expansion planned in the coming months. I'll say one thing for the MBTA coaches... leg room is not an issue there. That said, this will almost certainly put the seats with tables in even higher demand.

If and when I get the chance to try any of the above, I'll report back.

Non-sequiter that Jeff will appreciate: MASSRides has got to have the most valuable domain -- commute.com -- of any public transportation agency. They should consider selling it to help offset the state budget crisis, and go with the less valuable but better matching massrides.com, which appears to be parked and for sale.

I've tried the connection on the MBTA commuter rail and while it is not exactly rock solid, it is good enough for emails and a bit of browsing. Not sure what ports they block and which they leave open but I was not able to establish a VPN connection.

Boy, that's a bummer. Without the VPN capability, I'm better off just typing on the Blackberry -- or using it as my modem. The drawback with the latter is I can't use the phone at the same time, but then again, the fellow passengers will probably be glad I am not talking on the phone.
